REBT theory says that it is generally irrational and self-defeating to get all worked up about someone else’s behavior. The anger is based on a faulty assumption, which is that the other person SHOULD behave in the way you want them to. Additionally, REBT theory also says that if a person holds a negative cognition about a particular subject; then, by working through the irrational thought using the process created by Dr. Albert Ellis, the person will be able to see that the thought is irrational, be able to create new positive thoughts to replace the old negative thought form(s) and provides the participant evidence that the new thought is actually true and the old negative thought is false. Approximately four years ago, I began using the ABC’s of REBT to assist the client with reduction in irrational thinking. Then, I took it a step further to create Positive Affirmations from the person’s work he or she had completed. However, we all know that memorizing Positive Affirmations rarely works after weeks and possibly years of rehearsal. I thought, “If BLS works in Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to change a negative thought to a positive thought, then, it may work for these other situations.” I tried it; and, it worked beautifully. I have pairing the ABC’s of REBT with Bilateral Stimulation successfully, to assist my clients with eliminating these very difficult irrational thoughts, since Fall of 2014.
